The poem was inspired by an area in the Scottish Borders beside the River Tweed where, due to the effects of erosion and some curious geological features, many of the river-stones have been fashioned into perfect heart shapes.
In the Druid’s zodiac the salmon is the animal guardian for “Coll” i.e. August to September. The plant symbol of this month is the hazel.
The salmon is associated with the gaining of wisdom and in Irish folklore The Salmon of Knowledge ate the Nine Hazelnuts of Wisdom that fell into its pool; thus the Irish mythical hero Finn mac Cumhaill is said to have gained his own prophetic abilities from eating the Salmon of Knowledge.
Salmon are speckled which in Celtic lore indicates a connection with the Otherworld. A doorway through rock into the Otherworld was referred to as the speckled gate (cómhla breac).
The salmon was held to be the oldest, and therefore wisest of the animals.
