Handmade Stoneware

The Obby Oss dance, which takes place at Padstow, Cornwall, on 1st May - known as May Day or Beltane (more properly, Bealltainn) in the old calendar. Bealltainn is the second most significant celebration in the Celtic calendar after Samhain. In the cycle of Celtic Esbats (Lunar holidays) May is the month of the Milk Moon and is known as the three-milking-month.

The dance in this form may only be a few centuries old but it revives more ancient traditions of fertility rituals and practises surrounding worship of the horse and the significance of the day.
