‘As the title suggests this sculpture is inspired by Edwardian ladies strolling through parks and gardens with long-handled parasols, twirling them as they chatted to friends and lovers.

After perfecting the parasol to look beautiful and delicate, able to move in the lightest of airs, I hit upon the form of a surreal delicate tree to support them.

I discovered that the parasols had their origins in China or Japan, and were originally made of green paper, later becoming red. For this reason I gave the stem a black finish with a mist of red over it, reminiscent of oriental lacquer.’
