In the Celtic calendar Samhain or Halloween is New Year’s Eve, the boundary between one year and the next. Boundaries in general were held to be sacred; the surface of water was particularly meaningful as it was believed to be a gateway into the Otherworld, and many similar places where there are gaps, cracks and interfaces were held to be magical places where the Otherworld could creep through.
Sunset is the time when it is neither one day or the next and therefore a time of magic when spirits can move between the two.
In the Druid’s zodiac, the owl is one of the animal guardians for “Ngetal”, i.e. October to November. The plant symbol for this month is the reed.
