About the artist

Stephen Thompson

Meet the artist — Stephen Thompson

Stephen achieved his MA Design in Ceramics, a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Ceramics and the London Certificate in Art and Design (with Credit). He teaches part time in addition to producing commission work and own work which is sold through galleries. Dancing clocks and vases, ferocious cats and other animals are some of the images he uses in his work. Being influenced by Expressionist painting and sculpture he finds that his style suits the expressive qualities that clay can produce. He is intrigued by the contrasts that can be obtained by using several different building techniques on one piece, combining slab building, coiling and throwing. Decorating with slips, oxides and glazes further enhances the work, before it is fired to a high stoneware temperature.
