Inspired by Bernard Leach, Jonathan Chiswell Jones started the JCJ Pottery in 1974, and became interested in making lustreware after seeing William De Morgan’s work. Lustreware pottery is decorated so that it reflects light in the same way as silver and gold. Jonathan Chiswell Jones and Kerry Bosworth design, make and decorate the porcelain pieces, employing processes pioneered by the potters of the Middle East over 1,000 years ago. Their aim is to produce work which is practical, beautiful, and unmistakably theirs. Using a mix of clay, silver and copper, brushes are used to apply this muddy pigment. After firing, the unwanted clay is wiped away allowing the decoration to reflect light, and iridescent colours are visible if the pot is moved. It takes one firing to harden the porcelain, a second to melt the glaze and a third to create the lustre which brings the decoration to life.
