‘I have been working with clay for over 30 years now and have enjoyed every moment with this versatile and exciting material.’ Katy is based in Lancashire where she creates contemporary ceramic vessels, bowls and wall pieces from her studio. Her ceramics are decorated with slips before being impressed with marks which are inspired by photographs taken whilst travelling extensively. Splashes of colour are used to highlight the texture and mark making before firing to stoneware. Each piece is unique and is slab built with black clay; they are a celebration of form, material and mark making. The marks on each piece are created with man-made objects such as screws and nails found on the street, or parts of circuit boards salvaged from abandoned electrical goods. This way of impressing marks into the clay is a reflection of Katy’s long held fascination with the concept of future fossils and how the throw away nature of modern life affects the land. The vessels will happily hold water if required.
