Meet the artist — Shaun Gagg
The amazing sculptures of artist Shaun Gagg, are created by painstakingly bending and welding together hundreds, sometimes thousands, of coins, keys or nails.
Shaun started his artistic career making large abstract stone sculptures, but an old climbing injury forced him to change direction and he switched to welding composite metal sculptures which have proved very popular.
Whereas before the natural shape of the stone dictated the final form of the finished sculpture, with welding Shaun can let his imagination run wild and make practically anything. Subjects have included Classical faces, human torsos and full figures, a life size jaguar, a fighting bull, abstract shapes and a life size statue of Christ, which took almost six months to make.
‘I always look to put some magic or mystery into my sculptures, be it ancient echoes from the stone age in my monoliths or just the way a figure seems to be pondering the riddles of life.’
He has also made work for the home or office including his chair with rockers and his dramatic egg lights, which can change colour or setting by using a remote control light fitting. His work can be further enhanced by the use of lighting which creates wonderful shadow projections on the surrounding surfaces. Most of his work is equally at home indoors or outside in the garden.
