Original Oil on Box Canvas

In the centre of Prague, amongst it’s beautifully illuminated stone architecture, hurtles a midnight tram, the passengers unaware of my presence. It gives off it’s own luminosity, and it’s cables criss-cross the evening sky.

My focus was to capture the energy and dynamism of the moving tram within the magical setting of the city at night.  Taking shots at midnight in Prague was mesmerising. Using a slow shutter to capture the movement of the tram but also its inhabitants, existing in a different dimension, cocooned in the glow of the carriage.

Techniques and media used:

The aim was on creating a dramatic chiaroscuro, effect, where you have a high contrast between the very dark and very light areas. The windows of the building are distorted, by responding to my photographic panning technique to capture the details of the passengers with my camera. I also wanted to add contrast to this, by using big brushstrokes and less information within the foreground, allowing the oil paint to run and have it’s own character.
