Description

Original Oil on Canvas

Basia’s work speaks a universal language and touches the spirit of art lovers across the globe. Currently, her work appear in collections in Canada, USA, Great Britain, France, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Ireland, and Australia.

Her art reflects the ordinary imagery of life, in an extraordinary way. Her dreamlike portraits give us a glimpse of people passed by on the rainy Scottish streets, people met in the underground, or remembered from crowded cafes. Basia believes that images are quite subjective unless, of course, the image evokes a strong emotion or lifts someone’s spirit; then the image conveys a special message. Her oils draw us in with subtle blends of hues, the introspection of her subjects, and occasional whimsical or dream-inspired elements. She captures poignant emotion in her character’s facial and body expressions. Basia’s work is visionary, fresh, and powerfully evocative.

About the artist

Basia Roszak

Meet the artist — Basia Roszak

Having originally lived in Poland and then Canada, Basia eventually moved to Glasgow in 1998. She primarily works in oils, watercolour and ink, creating artwork which speaks a universal language. Driven by her multicultural experiences, her sensitively observed figurative art captures her subjects as they go about their everyday activities or engage in quieter moments of contemplation, and have a strong dream-like quality. Her works are often introspective and poignant, and occasionally whimsical, but always evocative and fresh. She manages to capture the emotions of her characters perfectly through their facial expressions and body language. The group portraits feature a strong emotional bond between her subjects, whereas there is a pathos and introspection to her singular day dreamers. The artworks feature characteristic use of strong colour and composition, combined with an energy and vitality to her brushwork. ‘I don’t look for outside beauty in my painted people. My goal is to capture the moment, the mood; the happiness, the melancholy and sometimes sadness in ordinary people in their everyday activities. Sometimes I want to bring memories to the viewer; happy moments from their childhood, long gone first love, being in the pub with dear friends. The bubbles present in all my paintings represent fragile moments and moods of the people frozen with the use of oil paint’.

What is the difference between an original painting and an art print?

This section aims to clarify what makes something an original artwork and answer some common questions relating to digital art prints.

Original paintings
One of a kind

Original paintings

An original painting is a unique, one-off piece of art created directly by the artist themselves; consequently, once it sells, that exact piece cannot be purchased again.

Painting mediums

Painting mediums

There are many different materials that an artist may use to create an original artwork, including oils, acrylics, watercolour, gouache and mixed media.

Colour and technique

Colour and technique

The subtleties and depth of colour are clearly evident. It is easier to comprehend the technique the artist has employed by direct observation.

Surface texture

Surface texture

The actual painted surface is clearly visible, such as texture and any expressive brush strokes and mark-making.

Collector value

Collector value

For customers who want the artist’s true original piece. However, even after purchase, the artist still owns the intellectual copyright.

Art prints
Reproduction

Art prints

An art print is created by a digital printing process in which the artist's original artwork is scanned and an inkjet printer then recreates the image by printing it onto paper or canvas.

Open editions

Open editions

Open edition prints are reproductions of an artwork or photograph with no set limit on the number of copies that can be produced.

Limited editions

Limited editions

Limited edition prints are high quality reproductions of an original artwork produced in a strictly capped, fixed quantity.

Artist enhanced

Artist enhanced

Artist enhanced prints (hand-embellished) are reproductions that the artist has altered after printing, usually using paint or gel mediums, to give the visual effect of the original artwork.

Hand signed

Hand signed

Hand signed prints are individually signed by the artist, usually in the margin below the image, ensuring it meets the artist's approval and increases its authenticity and collectability.
